Post Beijing Working Group

This committee based in Toronto reports to OWN Provincial Council.

In 1995 the United Nations conducted an international Conference on Women in Beijing. The Older Women’s Network Post Beijing Working Group was formed that year to monitor and promote our provincial and federal governments’ adherence to three documents signed by Canada:

  the Beijing Platform for Action

  Canada’s Plan for Gender Equality

the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)

The Post Beijing Working Group urges our governments to live up to the promises made in these documents and to promote the advancement of women. The Working Group keeps abreast of womens’ affairs internationally through contacts with:

  Voice of Women for Peace

Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom

Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women

Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action

The Post Beijing Working Group seeks to educate members of OWN and other organizations on issues of concern to women both at home and internationally and to build the capacity of women to affect change.

The work of the group is accomplished through public workshops and seminars, and articles in OWN’s CONTACT and other media. As well, a priority is greater communication with policy –makers. Co-operation with our counterparts in other countries is achieved through correspondence and some members have visited groups abroad.

Post Beijing meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 1.30 p.m. at 115 The Esplanade. Members and visitors are welcome – there is interesting work for all.
